This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 18, 2013 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. The hot weather has arrived, along with several severe storms. Reports are fewer , probably because of the heat. Rain has been spotty in the northwest during the last week with some getting more than they want and some none at all. Charlene Nelson reported 11 COMMON LOONS at Eagle Lake in Otter Tail County on July 13. From Becker County, Steve Midthune reported that there is some shorebird habitat at Hamden Slough were he saw GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, and SOLITARY SANDPIPER on July 18. Kristy May reported that there are YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS nesting in the cattail marsh south of the intersection of US 59 and CR 13. Kathy Bresee, in Moorhead , Clay County, has two BROWN THRASHERS at her feeder in Moorhead since July 1st. Among the species reported by Kristy May were nine AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS seen flying over Waubun on July 15. Other species seen included an ORCHARD ORIOLE. Bill Blackburn found a DICKCISSEL at the Parnell impoundment along CR 17 at the east gate. A FIELD SPARROW was seen in the interior of the impoundment. COOPER'S HAWK and BALD EAGLE were seen in East Grand Forks. Emily Hutchins observed a DICKCISSEL across from the Nature Conservancy office along MN 32 about three miles south of US 2 on July 18. A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was seen feeding several voracious recently fledged young in Sandy Aubol's yard in East Grand Forks on July 18.
