You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Migration is wrapping up , and folks are starting to be happy when it is 45 degrees outside, a sure sign of impending winter. Wind has removed the leaves from all but the most tenacious species. Charlene Nelson in Grant County reported COOPER'S HAWK and BROWN CREEPER at Elbow Lake this week. On October 26, she saw FRANKLIN'S GULL and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW. Emily Hutchins saw the first ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Glacial Ridge NWR in Polk County on October 23. Sandy Aubol reported SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and PURPLE FINCH on October 29 in East Grand Forks. On October 31, she saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW there. Shelley Steva and I made a trip to the rice paddies near the Clearwater River on October 27 where we found thousands of TUNDRA SWANS, CANADA GEESE, and MALLARDS. Other ducks seen there included GADWALL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, AMERICAN WIGEON, and BLUE-WINGED TEAL. Up to 15 BALD EAGLES, most adults, were seen in the area looking over the waterfowl population. Also seen were a KILLDEER, and three GREATER YELLOWLEGS, some SNOW BUNTINGS, and a few RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. In Pennington County, we saw six TUNDRA SWANS in flight. Three SHARP-TAILED GROUSE flew across the road in eastern Clearwater County east of the Gully Fen on October 27. Thanks to Charlene Nelson and Sandy Aubol for their reports.
