This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 14th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An immature ROSS'S GOOSE was found by Mike Hendrickson on the 9th at the Two Harbors cemetery. It was relocated on the 11th at the cemetery and on the 13th at the municipal campground addition at Burlington Bay. Shawn Zierman found a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on the 14th at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors.
Peder Svingen saw two LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 5th at Brighton Beach in east Duluth, and two on the 8th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. Kim Eckert and others saw two SURF SCOTERS and a LONG-TAILED DUCK on the 6th at the Superior Entry. A first-winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and adult and immature THAYER'S GULLS continue to be seen on both sides of the state line at the Superior Entry. A RED-THROATED LOON was seen on the 6th at the Sky Harbor Airport on Park Point, but it has not been relocated. Peder Svingen and others saw five AMERICAN AVOCETS on the 12th at lot #1 on Wisconsin Point, as well as a FRANKLIN’S GULL there on the 13th.
