Jim Howitz reported the other day that "one Red-headed Woodpecker fledged the morning of September 24 and the second around3:00 pm that day. They are both color banded and I saw them October 1. The adult female disappeared two weeks ago. The male has been doing all the work since. " This is at Cedar Creek Bog in northern Minnesota. He also reported that about 30 RHWO's were still around. Their experience has been that they usually migrate out in late August into September and that there is a good chance that if they are around this late, there is preceived to be adequate food (mast) for them to overwinter.
