This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Sunday February 23rd, 2014.
After no reports for almost two months, on February 22nd, the LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was again seen at the feeders of Janet Anderson in the town of Roosevelt. This is along Roseau County Road 17 just north of highway 11 and the first house on the left after passing over railroad tracks. Please do not call or bother the Andersons in the evenings, and note that the bird had also been reported at the house directly to the east in Lake of the Woods County.
Extraordinary was the first Minnesota winter record of a RED-THROATED LOON, which was picked up injured in Isanti County on February 19th. It is now recovering at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville.
In Stearns County near the Sherburne County line, a LONG-TAILED DUCK is being seen just below the 10th Street dam.
In the Sax-Zim Bog of St. Louis County, two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were along McDavitt Road on the weekend of the 15th.
On the 15th, a CAROLINA WREN was at the home of Roxanne Morgan in Houston, Houston County.
On the 10th, a TOWNSEND SOLITAIRE was in the Whitewater WMA, on the west side of state highway 74, one and a quarter miles north of Winona County Road 26.
BALD EAGLES are incubating eggs in Ramsey County, and GREAT HORNED OWLS are also nesting in a few scattered spots. Despite the cold, I have several reports of what are probably northbound migrants, including BELTED KINGFISHER, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, HORNED LARK, FOX SPARROW, and HARRIS'S SPARROW.
