This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 5,
2014 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

We are in the summer rainy season in the northwest this week. With rain
almost every day, the area is pretty soggy. Needless to say it is taking
it's toll on the secondary roads, so be careful where you go when
birding. Birds seem happy with the many insects that are appearing ,
including ticks and mosquitoes. Major migration is over with only the
stragglers being seen except on the nesting grounds.

Gretchen Mehmel and Beth Siverhus were birding in Lake of the Woods
County on May 30 where they found the following warblers, most of which
may nest there: CONNECTICUT WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER,
CANADA WARBLER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA,
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, NASHVILLE WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, OVENBIRD,
and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. They also observed RUFFED GROUSE, SPRUCE
GROUSE, GRAY JAY, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, WINTER
WREN, BROWN CREEPER, and SCARLET TANAGER.

In Roseau County on June 1, Beth and Jeff Siverhus saw two CASPIAN TERNS
on Lake of the Woods, along with COMMON TERNS, RING-BILLED GULLS, and
HERRING GULLS. Also in Roseau County, they found BOBOLINKS and LE
CONTE'S SPARROWS. Shelley Steva and I found two GREAT EGRETS and a
TURKEY VULTURE at the Norland impoundment that day, and in a flooded
field in the western part of the county a few shorebirds. Included were
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, MARBLES GODWIT, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, WILSON'S SNIPE and WILSON'S PHALAROPE. We
found that the many flooded acres still had too much water for much
shorebird habitat, and with the severe thunderstorm that came through
tonight, it would appear that Roseau County got some additional rain.

At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County , Beth Siverhus found GREAT HORNED
OWL, AMERICAN BITTERN, and YELLOW-THROATED VIREO among others on May 31.

Here in Pennington County, I have been hearing BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS
across the river from us in the brush remaining from the severe storm
last year. Shelley Steva reported a late YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and a
late NASHVILLE WARBLER on June 4 in Thief River Falls.

Sandy Aubol reported SWAINSON'S THRUSH and MOURNING WARBLER in her yard
in East Grand Forks in Polk County on June 2. Emily Hutchins reported
WESTERN KINGBIRD at Mentor WMA and an ALDER FLYCATCHER also in Polk
County.

Mark Otnes found a SPOTTED TOWHEE at Buffalo River SP on June 2.
Directions are to go to the main swimming beach and picnic area, go west
to the bridge, continue to the east for 0.3 miles. The bird was in the
aspens and brush where the Prairie View and River View trails split.
Also seen there on May 31 was a COMMON RAVEN.

Emily Hutchins did some birding in Maplewood SP in Otter Tail County on
June 3 where she found BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER,
VEERY, SCARLET TANAGER, and FIELD SPARROW. Warblers included
CONNECTICUT, more than twenty GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, CERULEAN WARBLER,
AMERICAN REDSTART, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, OVENBIRD, BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, and YELLOW WARBLER.

Thanks to Beth and Jeff Siverhus, Emily Hutchins, Mark Otnes, Sandy
Aubol, and Shelley Steva for their reports.
