This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 17th, 2014 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A RED-THROATED LOON was seen by Jan and Larry Kraemer on the 16th near the Sky Harbor Airport at Park Point. They also saw three SURF SCOTERS at the Recreation Area on the 13th. Peder Svingen found a very early GLAUCOUS GULL on the 16th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. Peder also saw several THAYER'S GULLS at Wisconsin Point on the 16th. Kim Eckert reports that the ROSS’S GOOSE along Garfield Avenue in the Duluth Port Terminal was still present on the 13th.

Amanda Morrow saw a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE on the 17th in Carlton County north of Esko, at the intersection of the Canosia Road (CR 1) and the Stark Road (CR 491). David Brislance saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 12th north of Lutsen in Cook County.
