Around noon today I observed a single Smith's Longspur along the
Brown/Cottonwood county line (460th/490th Ave.) about a half mile north of
Cottonwood CR 10. I got a brief glimpse of the bird as it flushed from the
roadside with a larger flock of longspurs. The other birds that I was able
to briefly view in close proximity appeared to be Laplands, but there were
several small flocks flying around the harvested ag fields and I wasn't
able to get good looks at even a quarter of these birds so there may well
have been more Smith's present. This area is a few miles west and a little
over one mile north of Red Rock Prairie TNC which I mentioned in my post
yesterday. Interestingly I neither heard nor saw any longspurs at Red Rock
Prairie earlier today (strong winds are a factor today), although there
were two Snow Buntings along the quartzite outcrops.
