This is the Duluth Birding Report for November 13th, 2014 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Two COMMON EIDERS were found by Karl Bardon on the 10th at Brighton Beach in east Duluth. The birds were later relocated at Glensheen Mansion and then at the Beacon Point condominiums near 21st Avenue East. They have been relocated every day between the 10th and the 13th, and have been seen as far west as Leif Erickson Park near 14th Avenue East and as far east as Brighton Beach and the mouth of the Lester River. This is the fifth record for Minnesota and the first since 1966. Tony Hertzel also photographed a HARLEQUIN DUCK flying by the two eiders in Duluth on the 11th.

Amazingly, Bob Myers found a COMMON EIDER on the 13th at the Silver Bay marina in Lake County, at the same time the two were being seen in Duluth. The bird was seen in the bay south of the rock jetty that forms the southern border of the marina. It was visible from the cliffside observation platform on the west side of the marina property. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was also seen nearby.

Butch Ukura found a SNOWY OWL on the 11th in Aitkin County south of Palisade, along 310th Avenue, 1.2 miles south of 470th Street.

RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS are still being reported from a few locations, including Smithville in west Duluth, East Arrowhead Road in Woodland, and along Scenic Highway 61, two miles west of Two Harbors.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on November 20th.
