This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 12th, 2015 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A pair of HARLEQUIN DUCKS was found by Tom Bloom on the 12th at Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay. The male HARLEQUIN DUCK found on the 1st by Al Loken at Agate Bay in Two Harbors was relocated as recently as the 10th near the ore docks. Up to 45 LONG-TAILED DUCKS have also been seen recently at Agate Bay and at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors.
The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW found by Jeff Newman at his backyard feeders at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street is still present as of the 9th. It is being seen sporadically in his yard and in the alley above his home, on both sides of 44th Avenue East. Birders are welcome to look for the bird but Jeff asks observers to stand by the corner of his front porch and not in his yard.
The COMMON EIDER in the Duluth/Superior was seen as recently as the 12th at Canal Park, but it has also been seen as recently as the 10th in the open water near the bridge leading to Barker's Island in Superior, Wisconsin. GLAUCOUS GULLS, THAYER’S GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, and ICELAND GULLS continue to be seen at Canal Park in Duluth.
The AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER found by Sparky Stensaas on the 3rd along the Three Lake Road north of Island Lake was relocated on the 10th by Ken and Susan Schumacher. It was seen west of CR 4, 0.2 mile east of fire number 5144.
David Brislance saw a few hundred LONG-TAILED DUCKS four miles east of Grand Marais on the 9th. Bill Tefft saw a small flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Ely on the 12th on the 900 block of East Camp Street.
In the Sax-Zim Bog, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS have been seen along McDavitt Road, 3.2 miles north of the Sax Road, and along the Admiral Road, about 3.5 miles north of the Sax Road. BOREAL CHICKADEES are being seen mainly at the Admiral Road suet feeders, 3.8 miles north of the Sax Road. GREAT GRAY OWLS have been seen in these same areas along the Admiral Road and McDavitt Road. EVENING GROSBEAKS are coming to two feeders in Sax-Zim: “Mary Lou's” feeders on CR 444, 1 mile west and 0.5 mile north of the junction of CR 27 and CR 5, and the Morse feeders on the Blue Spruce Road, 1 mile north of CR 133.
In Superior, Wisconsin an adult gray-phase GYRFALCON has been seen as recently as the 11th at the Peavy grain elevators along Connor's Point Road off US Highway 53, about a half mile east of the Blatnik Bridge. It was reported as recently as the 10th. Birders are reminded to remain on Connor’s Point Road and not trespass on private property in the area.
