This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 5th, 2015 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A total of 259 LONG-TAILED DUCKS was counted on Lake Superior on the 1st
between Tofte and Lutsen in Cook County. One flock of 122 was at the
Tofte Town Park, a flock of 73 was at Good Harbor Bay, 47 were at the
Cascade River Wayside Rest, and 17 were seen on the east edge of Grand
Marais.

In the Sax-Zim Bog, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS have been seen along
McDavitt Road, 3.2 miles north of the Sax Road, and along the Admiral
Road, about 3.5 miles north of the Sax Road. BOREAL CHICKADEES are being
seen mainly at the Admiral Road suet feeders, 3.8 miles north of the Sax
Road. EVENING GROSBEAKS are coming to two feeders in Sax-Zim: “Mary
Lou's” feeders on CR 444, 1 mile west and 0.5 mile north of the junction
of CR 27 and CR 5, and the Morse feeders on the Blue Spruce Road, 1 mile
north of CR 133. Two HOARY REDPOLLS are being seen at Mary Lou's
feeders, and another is being seen at the Sax Zim Bog welcome center on
Owl Avenue.

The first migrant HORNED LARKS were reported by Sparky Stensaas on the
2nd in Carlton County.

The Golden-crowned Sparrow found by Jeff Newman at his backyard feeders
at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street has not been reported since
February 15th, but it may still be present. It was being seen
sporadically in his yard and in the alley above his home, on both sides
of 44th Avenue East. Birders are welcome to look for the bird but Jeff
asks observers to stand by the corner of his front porch and not in his
yard. The Common Eider in the Duluth/Superior Harbor has not been seen
since February 20th, nor have the various gull species at Canal Park.

In Superior, Wisconsin an adult gray-phase GYRFALCON has been seen as
recently as the 4th at the Peavey grain elevators along Connor's Point
Road off US Highway 53, about a half mile east of the Blatnik Bridge.
Birders are reminded to remain on Connor’s Point Road and not trespass
on private property in the area.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on March 12th.
