This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 6, 2015 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

After a hot muggy week, the weather the last few days settled down into the high seventies much to everyone's delight. However, today the humidity returned and with it scattered heavy rains. There haven’t been a lot of reports over the last two weeks, but we should be looking out for the start of migration. Some folks are finding warblers again, and the shorebird migration is already happening.

Charlene Nelson in Elbow Lake in Grant County reported an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER on July 31, and an ORCHARD ORIOLE on August 2.

John Ellis reported 23 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS in Douglas County near the intersection of CR 15 and CR 56 on July 30. About 3400 shorebirds were present there including GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, LEAST SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, WILSON’S SNIPE, and WILSON’S PHALAROPE. On August 1, he saw 1500 FRANKLIN’S GULLS at the Osakis WTP.

In Polk County, Russ Wilbur reported several RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS on the greenway in East Grand Forks on August 5. Sandy Aubol observed the return of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE to her feeders. A COOPER'S HAWK also flew through the yard on August 5.

Beth Siverhus reported a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at Mike Marvin's place southeast of Warroad, Roseau County on August 3. In Warroad, Beth reported BROAD-WINGED HAWK, MERLIN, EASTERN KINGBIRD, RED-EYED VIREO, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, OVENBIRD, and YELLOW WARBLER.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Charlene Nelson, John Ellis, Russ Wilbur, and Sandy Aubol for their reports.
