Fall has surely come to the northwest as we went from the nineties down
to the high fifties in the last few days. All of nature now looks like
fall .Leaves are starting to turn, and acorns are falling fast. The mix
of birds is changing rapidly- a few warblers are re-appearing from the
north, and flycatchers are going.

A juvenile LITTLE GULL was found by Denny Martin with the Minnesota
Birding Weekend group at the Warroad WTP this weekend . It was seen by
many observers until Steve Midthune saw it on September 9 . At that time
it flew with other gulls to the south, and it can be assumed that it has
probably left the area.

The MBW group found a BARRED OWL at the Roseau River WMA on September 5.
This weekend 6-8 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were found in the burn area
from last spring's forest fire along the Thompson Forest Road northeast
of Bemis Hill. There were several other species of woodpeckers there
also and lots of evidence of bark beetle and woodpecker activity. The
MBW group found 16 species of shorebirds at the various sewage ponds in
the county including at least 60 WILSON’S SNIPES at the Greenbush WTP. A
WESTERN KINGBIRD was found in Warroad on September 5. A few of each of
twenty warbler species was found on the weekend but no large numbers. A
few LE CONTE’S SPARROWS were seen and there were a couple of BOBOLINKS
at the Warroad WTP.

In Pennington County, Barb and Denny Martin found 9 warbler species
including CONNECTICUT WARBLER at the Greenwood Trails in Thief River
Falls on September 9. One SNOW GOOSE was seen at the Goodridge WTP by
Ken and Susan Schumacher and reported by Denny Martin. This week in our
yard near Thief River Falls, on September 6, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER,
up to four female or young RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, HOUSE WREN, and a
few BALTIMORE ORIOLES were seen. On September 9, a GRAY CATBIRD was seen
in the cranberry bushes, and on September 10 there were 6-8 female
PURPLE FINCHES.

Barb and Denny Martin found a PHILADELPHIA VIREO at the big cemetery
east of Red Lake Falls in Red Lake County on September 9.

Sandy Aubol reported an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in East Grand Forks on
September 8, and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, and
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on September 9.

From Otter Tail County, Alice Martin reported SANDHILL CRANES, EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE, FRANKLIN'S GULL, HERRING GULL, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD this
week.

Thanks to Alice Martin, Barb and Denny Martin, Kim Eckert, Sandy Aubol,
and Sandy Martens for their reports.
