This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 24th, 2015 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A juvenile MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen by Karl Bardon and others at Hawk Ridge on the 21st, and a record high count of 278 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS was tallied on the 22nd. The peak BROAD-WINGED HAWK flight occurred on the 19th with a total of 16,815.
Clinton Neinhaus and others saw three BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on the 18th near the Sky Harbor Airport on Park Point, and two were still present on the 21st. A first-cycle FRANKLIN'S GULL continues to be reported from around the Duluth-Superior harbor, most recently on the 24th at the Park Point ball fields. A CALIFORNIA GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and PARASITIC JAEGERS continue to be reported from the first parking lot on Wisconsin Point. Peder Svingen saw a PARASITIC JAEGER and three unidentified JAEGERS on the 24th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry.
A female SPOTTED TOWHEE was found by Jim Lind on the 24th in Two Harbors on the east side of the parking lot behind the Lake View Clinic, two blocks north of the Holiday station. An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the 18th at Knife River on the large concrete crib in Lake Superior out from the mouth of the Knife River.
