This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 22nd, 2015 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported by Jeff Newman on the 18th and again on the 21st at his home at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth. A Golden-crowned Sparrow overwintered at Jeff's yard last year, and this may be the same individual. Birders are welcome to look for the bird but Jeff asks observers to stand by the corner of his front porch and not in his yard.
Elizabeth Copper found a VARIED THRUSH on the 18th in her yard in Melrude, St. Louis County, and it was still present as of the 22nd. If birders are interested in looking for the bird they should first call her at 619-248-9154.
Two CATTLE EGRETS were found by Jim Lind at the Two Harbors cemetery on the west side of town. They were on the west side of the cemetery in the company of four Snow Geese. Two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and two SURF SCOTERS were seen on the 19th at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors. A RUDDY DUCK was seen on the 17th at the Castle Danger sewage lagoons in Lake County. Judd Brink saw a female-plumaged HARLEQUIN DUCK on the 16th in Cook County at the Chateau LeVeaux in Tofte.
Two SURF SCOTERS and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were seen by Clinton Nienhaus and others on the 19th near the Sky Harbor Airport on Park Point. A BLACK SCOTER was found by Tony Lau on the 18th at 40th Street on Park Point. Peder Svingen saw eight THAYER'S GULLS of various ages on the 21st on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen briefly on the 22nd at Hawk Ridge and a HOARY REDPOLL flew by on the 21st. GOLDEN EAGLES, NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS are being seen at the Ridge daily. Small numbers of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS have been seen in Duluth and along the North Shore during the past week and there have been more reports than normal of BOREAL CHICKADEES along the North Shore in Cook County.
Jonas Benson found a very late adult male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER on the 19th in east Duluth.
