This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 31st, 2015 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Josh Wallestad found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on the 27th in the town of Cook in northern St. Louis County, along 5th Street SE in front of the hospital. Josh also reported a flock of 46 EVENING GROSBEAKS along 2nd Street SE, just north of the Lutheran church. David Brislance found a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE on the 22nd at Artists’ Point in Grand Marais. One was also reported on the 22nd at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are being seen in Ely. Jean Brislance saw 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 22nd in Cook County near the Chateaux Leveaux near Tofte, and Sherry Siers saw a flock of 63 in Two Harbors on the 22nd at 3rd Avenue and 5th Street.
Justin Watts reported six SPRUCE GROUSE and an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 30th near the Sand River on Lake County Road 2. Sparky Stensaas saw three BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the 30th off the McDavitt Road in the Sax-Zim Bog.
ICELAND GULLS, THAYER'S GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and at least four late-lingering RING-BILLED GULLS continue to be seen at Canal Park in Duluth. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw a late GREATER SCAUP on the 27th near the mouth of the Miller Creek at 27th Avenue West, and two HOODED MERGANSERS on the 24th near the Duluth Port Terminal.
Kim Risen saw a gray morph GYRFALCON on the 29th just south of the Peavey elevator along US Highway 53 in Superior.
