Apparently the mild weather is about to end in the northwest, but so far no reports of impending storms. Feeders are busy with the usual winter inhabitants, and the last of the CBC's have been run.
From Douglas County, Benjamin Eckhoff reported on birds seen on the Alexandria and Kensington CBC's. Seen in and around the Lake Carlos SP were SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, BARRED OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BROWN CREEPER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and COMMON REDPOLL among others. Some waterfowl is still being seen in the area including one WOOD DUCK, 150 TRUMPETER SWANS, scaup, REDHEAD, COMMON MERGANSER, COMMON GOLDENEYE, PIED-BILLED GREBE, and AMERICAN COOT. Several BALD EAGLES were seen, and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. Nearly all the surrounding towns have flocks of EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES.
Charlene Nelson reported a HOARY REDPOLL in Perham in Otter Tail County on January 2.
In Becker County, Dave and Betty Hochhalter observed PILEATED WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and NORTHERN CARDINAL in their yard at Detroit Lakes.
Sandy Aubol reported an AMERICAN KESTREL in East Grand Forks in Polk County on December 27. On December 29, Joanne Johnson observed a SNOWY OWL along US 2 near Crookston. Also in Crookston, Sandy Aubol observed RED CROSSBILLS and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at the Oakdale cemetery in Crookston on January 6. RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and PINE SISKINS were also seen.
A large flock of about 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS showed up in our yard east of Thief River Falls in Pennington County this afternoon .
Beth Siverhus saw a BARRED OWL along MN 72 in Beltrami County on December 24. A VARIED THRUSH was seen at a feeder near Bemidji on January 4.
On December 27 Mike Thiele saw two GREAT GRAY OWLS southeast of Warroad in Roseau County. The Roseau CBC was held on January 2 where one NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found along MN 310, a GREAT GRAY OWL was on the Sprague Creek road, and a SNOWY OWL was seen along CR 120 three miles south of Roseau . Other species counted included SPRUCE GROUSE along the Sprague Creek Road, PINE GROSBEAK, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in town, NORTHERN SHRIKE , SNOW BUNTINGS, and COMMON REDPOLLS.
The Beltrami Island CBC in Lake of the Woods County tallied 18 species on December 31 including NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GRAY JAY, COMMON RAVENS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and RED CROSSBILLS. Six BOREAL CHICKADEES, and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER were seen just after count week in the Gustafson Camp area. The Baudette CBC was on January 1st where 28 species were found. They included one CANADA GOOSE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, SPRUCE GROUSE, MOURNING DOVE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the Pitt grade, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, SNOW BUNTINGS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, PINE GROSBEAKS, EVENING GROSBEAKS, and COMMON REDPOLLS were among the species seen. On December 27, Beth Siverhus saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE five miles south of Baudette along MN 72, and a NORTHERN HAWK OWL six miles south of Baudette along MN 72. A RED-TAILED HAWK was seen on CR 107.
