This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 5th, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth was reported as recently as the 30th. Birders are welcome to look for the bird but the homeowner asks observers to stay on the sidewalk and not venture into his yard. Small numbers of ICELAND GULLS, THAYER'S GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, and GLAUCOUS GULLS are also being seen.
A male LONG-TAILED DUCK continues to be seen at Agate Bay in Two Harbors as recently as the 4th. A flock of 60 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen on the 31st flying down the shore at Larsmont west of Two Harbors. A flock of 50 was also seen flying west on the 31st along the Homestead Road near the Korkki Road in Duluth Township. Kim Risen and others saw 200 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 29th in Biwabik at 4th Avenue North and 4th Street. Richard Blanton saw a flock of 12 on the 4th in Biwabik along Ryan Street. Bill Tefft saw a flock in Ely on the 2nd on the 400 block of east Pattison and James Street.
Rim Risen and others saw six SPRUCE GROUSE on the 29th along the Spruce Road in northern Lake County.
The dark gray/intermediate morph juvenile GYRFALCON near the Peavey elevator and Connor's Point off US Highway 53 in Superior was reported as recently as the 4th.
