This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 18th, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was found by Garrett Wee on the 12th at 17th Street on Park Point, but it has not been relocated. John Richardson saw four GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, two ICELAND GULLS, and three GLAUCOUS GULLS on the 15th at the Park Point Recreation Area. Peder Svingen saw a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and a GLAUCOUS GULL on the 17th at Interstate Island.
John Richardson saw more than 2000 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 17th at Portman Park in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth. Kristin Grover saw 250 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 18th along the Fiskett Road in Rice Lake Township. A flock of 75 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen on the 12th along MN Highway 61 at the McQuade Road. Sparky Stensaas saw a flock of 30 on the 13th in Wrenshall.
The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Grand Marais was seen and photographed again on the 16th at Artists’ Point. Steve Hansen saw 50 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 13th at Bluefin Bay in Tofte. A flock of 23 was seen on the 14th at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors, and 25 were seen on the 12th at the Lakewood Pumping Station east of Duluth.
Frank Nicoletti, Dave Carman and others saw another record early RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on the 12th at the West Skyline Hawk Count along Skyline Drive at Thompson Hill. They also counted 607 BALD EAGLES and 24 GOLDEN EAGLES.
Both GYRFALCONS continue to be seen as recently as the 18th near the Peavey elevator at Connor's Point off US Highway 53 and along Winter Street in Superior.
Recent new arrivals in the area include RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD on the 11th, KILLDEER and WESTERN MEADOWLARK on the 12th, AMERICAN WOODCOCK and AMERICAN KESTREL on the 13th, WOOD DUCK on the 14th, and GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP and a RING-NECKED DUCK on the 16th.
