This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, March 10,
2016 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Spring seems to be on the way, with all its ups and downs. Snow is
mostly gone except for the far northern part of Minnesota, for the time
being at least. Migration is getting started, and numbers of early
migrants are increasing.

From Hubbard County, Marshall Howe reported that it had been pretty
quiet around Dorset, but there were COMMON REDPOLLS and a few RED
CROSSBILLS seen this week.

Connie Cox from Itasca State Park reported TRUMPETER SWANS, CANADA
GOOSE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, PILEATED WOODPECKER, AMERICAN ROBIN, PINE
GROSBEAKS, and COMMON REDPOLLS.

In Becker County, Steve Midthune reported several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at
Hamden Slough, and they were joined by a NORTHERN HARRIER on March 7.
TRUMPETER SWANS and CANADA GEESE have also been seen there recently.

Many of the reports have come from Polk County. Sandy Martens reported
that a pair of BALD EAGLES were at the site of the nest near the East
Grand Forks WTP on March 5. On March 6, a SNOW GOOSE was observed by
Sandy Aubol on the East Grand Forks greenway. Six TRUMPETER SWANS were
seen by Bruce Flaig over Maple Lake in the southern part of the county
on March 8. He also reported a great reduction in numbers of COMMON
REDPOLLS this week. Shelley Steva saw two SNOWY OWLS along US 75 near
its intersection with CR 219 a couple of miles south of Crookston on
March 10. LAPLAND LONGSPURS and HORNED LARKS were also seen. Also in
Polk County, I saw two TRUMPETER SWANS along CR 252 today. BALD EAGLES
were seen in several locations along US 75 in both Norman and Polk
Counties.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen along CR 7 in Pennington County this
morning. A small flock of WILD TURKEYS were also seen along that road.

Thanks to Bruce Flaig, Connie Cox, Marshall Howe, Sandy Aubol, Sandy
Martens, Shelley Steva, and Steve Midthune for their reports.
