This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, April 21,
2016 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The world is turning green in the northwest in the wake of the recent
gentle rains, especially on the lawns. Despite the windy conditions, or
maybe because of them, the birds are streaming north. Southern parts of
the area are seeing the first warblers, more sparrows, some shorebirds
and other waders, and some of the swallows.

Gary Otnes in Otter Tail County reported AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, and BONAPARTE'S GULLS at the Mistinka River south of Fergus
Falls on April 16. At his home near Fergus Falls, there were TREE
SWALLOWS, BRAN SWALLOWS, PURPLE MARTINS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and SONG
SPARROW. Teresa Jaskiewicz from the Prairie Learning Center reported
TURKEY VULTUER, SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, GREAT EGRET, GREAT BLUE HERON,
FRANKLIN’S GULL, SWAMP SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and many others. At her home in Elizabeth, there
were AMERICAN WOODCOCK, LINCOLN’S SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and
others.

From Itasca State Park, Connie Cox reported many species including
EASTERN PHOEBE, WINTER WREN, PINE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and
FOX SPARROW at the park this week.

Marshall Howe at Dorset in Hubbard County sent in the following report:
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER , BROWN CREEPER, and CHIPPING SPARROW on April
16, TREE SWALLOW, VESPER SPARROW, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on April
17, PINE WARBLER on April 19, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER on April 20, and
BREWER'S BLACKBIRD on April 21.

In Becker County, Steve Midthune reported GREATER YELLOWLEGS and
PECTORAL SANDPIPER from the Lake Park WTP on April 18, and WILSON'S
SNIPE and HORNED GREBE from LaBelle Lake north of Lake Park.

Sandy Aubol in Polk County visited the impoundments in the Red River
Valley on April 17, where she found HORNED GREBE and RED-NECKED GREBE,
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT,
AMERICAN WHITE-PELICAN, AMERICAN COOT, MARBLED GODWIT, VESPER SPARROW,
and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD. In East Grand Forks on April 19 were many PURPLE
FINCH and COMMON GRACKLES. On April 20 she saw a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and
a WINTER WREN along the Red Lake River greenway.

Shelley Steva found a MOURNING DOVE ten miles north of Oklee in Red Lake
County on April 14. Anita Vettleson reported NORTHERN FLICKERS near
Oklee on April 17.

In Pennington County, I discovered what can only be described a fallout
of ducks on the morning of April 16 at the confluence of the Red Lake
and Thief Rivers. Around 8:30 am, there were at least 1000 ducks, and
grebes near the 8th St bridge. Among them were 11 species of ducks
including GREATER SCAUP, and RUDDY DUCKS, HORNED GREBES, RED-NECKED
GREBES, and PIED-BILLED GREBES, and at least one COMMON LOON. In the
yard this week, there has been much house hunting by WOOD DUCKS and
HOODED MERGANSERS. A GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET was seen on April 20.
Shelley Steva saw a BROAD-WINGED HAWK on April 21 at the south edge of
Thief River Falls.

On the Marshall County side of the Agassiz Valley impoundment, Sandy
Aubol found 100 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on April 17.

Anita Vettleson reported a COMMON LOON at Pine Lake in Clearwater County
on April 17.

Thanks to Anita Vettleson, Connie Cox, Gary Otnes, Marshall Howe, Sandy
Aubol, Shelley Steva, Steve Midthune, and Teresa Jaskiewicz for their
reports.
