This is the Duluth Birding Report for April 22nd, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth is still being seen daily. Birders are welcome to look for the bird but the homeowner asks observers to stay on the sidewalk and not venture into his yard. Gordy Martinson reported an EASTERN TOWHEE on the 21st in his yard in Lakewood Township.
A female HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen on the 19th on the west side of Knife Island near the Knife River marina. This is probably the same bird seen here on March 30th and in Two Harbors in late February. At least twelve LONG-TAILED DUCKS were still present on the 19th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. A VESPER SPARROW was seen on Lighthouse Point on the 16th.
Jane Johnson saw a GREAT EGRET on the 19th in Tofte in Cook County. David Brislance relocated the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE at Grand Marais near the East Bay Suites on the 17th.
Lars Benson saw a RED-THROATED LOON on the 22nd at Park Point near the Sky Harbor Airport. Clinton Nienhaus and others saw four GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE fly by Enger Tower in west Duluth on the 15th.
Recent new arrivals in the area include AMERICAN COOT, BROWN THRASHER, CHIPPING SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD on the 15th, BROAD-WINGED HAWK and SWAMP SPARROW on the 16th, PINE WARBLER on the 19th, SOLITARY SANDPIPER and PALM WARBLER on the 21st, and LESSER YELLOWLEGS and BONAPARTE'S GULL on the 22nd.
