Migration is picking up in the northwest now with the coming of warmer weather, and some unfortunate migrants chose to arrive the day it was only 22 degrees last Friday morning with a strong cold wind. Most counties are reporting all the swallows, an increasing number of warblers, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, and where there is a little habitat, a smattering of shorebirds. There seems to have been an influx of BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS this week as several observers reported them and I had several in my yard one day .

At the Osakis WTP in Douglas County, Andy Nyhus found a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on May 16.

A SUMMER TANAGER was reported by Kim Fisette at Reames Lake in Otter Tail County. Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported WARBLING VIREO, BANK SWALLOW, and YELLOW WARBLER on May 15; YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BARN SWALLOW, and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on May 16, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER , RED-EYED VIREO, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT on May 17, GREEN HERON and SORA on May 18, and RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on May 18.

Marshall Howe in Hubbard County observed SWAINSON'S THRUSH, EASTERN TOWHEE, AMERICAN REDSTART, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT on May 15, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, WILSONíS WARBLER, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on May 16, GREEN HERON, RED-EYED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, and CAPE MAY WARBLER on May 17, and MOURNING WARBLER on May 18.

Dave and Betty Hochhalter in Detroit Lakes, Becker County reported HOUSE WREN, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, SCARLET TANAGER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE on May 15. Paul Budde observed both TUNDRA SWANS and TRUMPETER SWANS at the rice paddies along the Clearwater River in both Red Lake and Polk Counties. In Polk County, he found a ROSS'S GOOSE at the Brandt-Angus impoundment, and also HUDSONIAN GODWIT, DUNLIN, and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Russ Wilber found an EASTERN BLUEBIRD in East Grand Forks on May 18.

In Red Lake County, Shelley Steva saw HOODED MERGANSER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, HOUSE WREN, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER on May 13. On May 15, Howard Towle found a WILLET at the rice paddy at 150 St and 350th Ave. GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were found in Gentilly township. A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was seen in a flooded quarry in Gentilly township. WILSON'S PHALAROPES were observed at the Red Lake Falls WTP.

Shelley Steva observed a MERLIN and LESSER YELLOWLEGS in Pennington County on May 13. This week at my home, a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD arrived on May 14, a pair of INDIGO BUNTINGS briefly visited on May 15, five SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were seen in the Red Lake River on May 17, and on May 18, I found HOUSE WREN, LEAST FLYCATCHER, and YELLOW WARBLER in the yard.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found by Paul Budde at Headquarters Pool at Agassiz NWR on May 14.

From Bemidji in Beltrami County, Nancy Wasik reported RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH this week among others.

From Roseau County, Beth Siverhus reported a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on May 13. Paul Budde found 30 WILSON'S PHALAROPES at the Badger WTP on May 16.
