This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, May 26,
2016 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

With the warmer weather and strong south winds, migration has proceeded
quickly this week. Now we are in the last phase of it, with all the
waterfowl here, raptor migration complete, flycatchers and vireos mostly
arrived this week, most of the early thrushes have gone through, all the
common warblers are coming through now, sparrows are here and all the
blackbirds. Many shorebird species can be seen in the northwest now
wherever there is suitable habitat, and that is somewhat scarce this
year.

In Kittson County, Paul Budde and four others found a CATTLE EGRET and 4
WILLETS at the Hallock WTP on May 21.

In Clearwater County, Alex Sundvall observed a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER at
Itasca State Park on May 21. Paul Budde's group found 9 species of
shorebirds at the rice paddies north of Clearwater along the Clearwater
River on May 21.

At Itasca State Park, Connie Cox reported COMMON LOON, SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK, 13 species of warblers including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, NORTHERN
PARULA, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, and MOURNING WARBLER. Other
species on the list included SCARLET TANAGER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and
many others.

Nancy Wasik observed EASTERN TOWHEE among other species in her yard in
western Beltrami County this week.

In Marshall County this week at the Agassiz Valley impoundment, Sandy
Aubol found 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, 15 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, a
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, and DUNLIN on May 21. At Old Mill
SP on May 24, she found RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO,
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE,
and VEERY.

Paul Budde's group found 3 WHIMBRELS and a SWAINSON’S HAWK at the quarry
in Pleasant Valley Township in the far southwestern part of Red Lake
County on May 23. 16 species of shorebirds were seen at the rice paddies
at 350th Ave and 150th St in the far northeastern part of the county.
They included 5 WHIMBRELS, 3 RUDDY TURNSTONES, and 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS. I
was there today, and found no shorebirds after the rain yesterday which
undoubtedly raised the water levels and moved the birds out. I did find
2 RUDDY TURNSTONES at the quarry location in the southwest. Paul’s group
found 10 AMERICAN AVOCETS and one RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the Oklee WTP.
210 WILSON’S PHALAROPES, 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 3 WILLETS were
seen at the Red Lake Falls WTP by Paul’s group. Once again, I found none
of them there today.

Russ Wilbur reported a BOBOLINK on the East Grand Forks side of the Red
River greenway in Polk County on May 20. Sandy Aubol reported a ROSS'S
GOOSE at the Angus/Oslo impoundment on May 21. At the Brandt/Angus
impoundment she saw AMERICAN AVOCET, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, MARBLED
GODWIT, STILT SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, WILSON’S PHALAROPE, and
BLACK TERN. On May 24, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were migrating over East Grand
Forks.

Steve Midthune reported that the Detroit Lake Festival found 155 species
this year in the first two days, including 19 species of warblers.

In Clay County, on May 20, Craig Mandel found a SAY'S PHOEBE at Felton
Prairie on the west side of 170th St just north of the small wooded area
on the north side of the lake.

Marshall Howe in Hubbard County reported CASPIAN TERN, RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, and SCARLET
TANAGER on May 20, TENNESSEE WARBLER on May 21, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and
EASTERN KINGBIRD on May 22, COMMON NIGHTHAWK on May 23, and CANADA
WARBLER on May 24.

In Wilkin County, Ben Fritchman found a WHITE-FACED IBIS, and a RED KNOT
at the Brown WPA on May 20. Other species found there were STILT
SANDPIPER, and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER. The WPA is located along CR 19 about
a half mile south of CR 20.
