This is the Duluth Birding Report for July 7th, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Rubin Stenseng found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the 27th at the Park Point Recreation Area, and it was last reported on the 30th. John Richardson found a DICKCISSEL on the 6th at the WLSSD Materials Recovery Center off Rice Lake Road. Peder Svingen reports that DICKCISSELS have recently been found in at least five different locations in nearby Douglas County, Wisconsin

A RED-THROATED LOON was found on the 7th at the Tettegouche State Park visitors' center. Peder Svingen saw one on the 30th near the Sky Harbor Airport at Park Point.

Josh Wallestad found at least three BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the 4th near the north end of the Old Sassass Road (CR 512), southeast of Cook in northern St. Louis County. He also found a CONNECTICUT WARBLER here on the 3rd.

Small numbers of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS have been reported in the past week at the Sax-Zim Bog and at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland. Until now, there had been almost no reports of this species in northeastern Minnesota this year.
