More typical summer weather has arrived this week- hot temperatures, and scattered thunderstorms throughout the area. Many places are over wet, but the Thief River Falls area has received timely, but not excessive rainfall. Wild flowers are blooming everywhere.
In Thief River Falls, Shelley Steva and I saw a MERLIN on July 17. On July 24, I went for a brief drive and found one adult GRAY PARTRIDGE with two three-quarter grown young at the corner of 200th St NE and 190th AVE NE just a few miles east of Thief River Falls. Other species seen on that drive included two families of AMERICAN KESTRELS, one of HORNED LARKS, many WESTERN MEADOWLARKS, and several RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS feeding young. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER pair has brought their three or four young of the year to our feeder to teach them how to get an easy meal.
In Red Lake County, Shelley Steva and I saw a juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON, on July 17. We also found a COOPER'S HAWK, and several other species of raptors. At the quarry, we saw the RING-BILLED GULLS with two young found originally by Barb and Denny Martin. They still weren’t flying, but could swim well.
In Polk County, Rolf Paulson visited Rydell NWR On July 21, where he saw five RUFFED GROUSE along the bike trail.
Rolf Paulson found CASPIAN TERNS at the Walker WTP in Cass County on July 22.
