Weather in the northwest has seemed very fall-like for the past couple of days, and migration has begun. Reports of migrating warblers are trickling in. Harvest has begun, but some areas are still very wet, and difficult to work. That said, there is very little shorebird habitat to be found.
In Clearwater County, Bob Ekblad found 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, a SANDERLING, three BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, some SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, and a single FRANKLIN’S GULL at the Clearbrook WTP on August 23.
Shelley Steva reported seeing 17 TURKEY VULTURES in a group very early in the morning of August 23 flying over the city of Thief River Falls. Here at the feeders, a family of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, several BALTIMORE ORIOLES with young, and a family of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS continue to come daily.
At the Red Lake Falls WTP in Red Lake County, Bob Ekblad found a GREAT EGRET on the back cell on August 23.
Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks in Polk County reports that migrants are slowly starting to trickle in. On August 19, she had RED-EYED VIREO, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, and AMERICAN REDSTART in her yard. On the East Grand Forks greenway on that day she saw three OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS, a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN WOOD PEWEE, LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE. BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK were in the yar d on August 20. On August 21, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, and WILSON'S WARBLER were seen . NASHVILLE WARBLER and MOURNING WARBLER were spotted on August 22, and four COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen on the greenway. A BLUE-HEADED VIREO came to her yard on August 24.
In Otter Tail County, Gary and Marion Otnes saw one adult and 5 juvenile SHARP-TAILED GROUSE and a WESTERN KINGBIRD in the prairie of Western Township on August 23.
From Grant County, Charlene Nelson reported COMMON NIGHTHAWK on August 19.
