This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 30th, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported on the 30th by Jeff Newman in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth. Jeff is at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street and has had a Golden-crowned Sparrow in his yard during the past two winters. As in past years, birders are welcome to look for the bird but Jeff asks observers to stay on the sidewalk and not venture into his yard.
Brad Abdenroth saw a SABINE'S GULL and two PARASITIC JAEGERS on the 28th on both sides of the Superior Entry. Several PARASITIC JAEGERS and a first-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continue to be reported from Wisconsin Point as recently as the 29th, and a SABINE’S GULL was reported by several observers from Lot 1 and Gull Bluff near the base of Wisconsin Point on the 24th and 25th. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw a FRANKLIN’S GULL in the Duluth Harbor on the 24th at Miller Creek near 27th Avenue West.
Don Kienholz found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the 26th in Canal Park near the Endion Station cider house. The bird was still present on the 30th. Peder Svingen found a SMITH'S LONGSPUR in a flock of about 100 LAPLAND LONGSPURS on the 27th at the Park Point Recreation Area ball fields.
A SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen at Hawk Ridge on the 26th, and single RED-THROATED LOONS flew past on the 26th and 28th. The first BOHEMIAN WAXWING of the season flew past the count site on the 28th.
Rita and Robert Reed found two ROSS'S GEESE on the 23rd in Two Harbors at the old football field next to the Burlington Bay campground. The birds were also seen on the 27th across MN Highway 61 near the golf course clubhouse. A WESTERN GREBE was seen on Burlington Bay in Two Harbors on the 28th and two SURF SCOTERS were seen on the 24th at Agate Bay.
