It has been a mild week in the northwest, and it appears that the migration has somewhat stalled. Many of the migrants have continued on their way, and not many new ones have appeared, so birding has been slow this week .
Charlene Nelson in Grant County reported a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and a female NORTHERN CARDINAL in her yard this week. At the North Ottawa Impoundment, she saw several small flocks of GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, three BALD EAGLES, and lots of AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS on October 29. Wayne Perala also saw BLUE-WINGED TEAL and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER there on November 2.
In Otter Tail County, Charlene Nelson observed 80 TRUMPETER SWANS on Lake Christina and many AMERICAN COOTS. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen near Blanche Lake.
Hubbard County sightings by Marshall Howe included NORTHERN SHRIKE in Dorset on October 28, a late juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on October 29, RED CROSSBILLS on November 1, COMMON LOON on November 2, and PURPLE FINCH on November 3. Becca Engdahl observed 100 PINE SISKINS near Walker on November 1.
In Polk County on October 29, Sandy Aubol saw the first of the season ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near Sherack. At the Agassiz Valley Impoundment , where the water is nearly gone, she reported that the AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS are still there.
Here in Pennington County, today, November 3, I found four SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along 160th St. NE seven miles east of Thief River Falls.
On the Marshall County side of the Agassiz Valley Impoundment on October 29, Sandy Aubol found that the RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS are still there. Sandy and I saw 8 BALD EAGLES, several COMMON RAVENS, and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES along Marshall CR 12 on October 29. Also seen were a few SNOW BUNTINGS, and at Thief Lake WMA, a RUFFED GROUSE.
Larry Wilebski in Kittson County observed 14 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES and 6 BLUE JAYS near his cabin north of Lancaster on October 30.
