This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 9th, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A CURVE-BILLED THRASHER was reported on the 4th at 605 NE 11th Street in Grand Rapids in Itasca County. The bird has apparently been present for a month or so and was seen (and heard singing) as recently as the 9th. The homeowners welcome birders but ask to not park in front of the white house next door on the corner, and only visit between 8 am and 5 pm.
The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street continues to be seen daily as recently as the 9th, with the most consistent time being at about 7:30 in the morning. A LONG-TAILED DUCK continues to be seen at Canal Park as recently as the 9th, as well as a late-lingering GREATER SCAUP. The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE at the dog park along the Riley Road on the north side of Duluth was last reported on the 2nd.
The EURASIAN TREE SPARROW in downtown Two Harbors was seen as recently as the 9th. It has been seen mainly along Waterfront Drive at the ground feeder at South Avenue next to Do North pizzeria and near the post office at 1st Avenue. The late-lingering RED-NECKED GREBE at Agate Bay in Two Harbors was still present on the 8th.
Two SPRUCE GROUSE were seen on the 6th along Lake County Road 2 about a quarter mile north of the Sand River. Large numbers of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and PINE GROSBEAKS are being seen along the North Shore, especially in Grand Marais, Two Harbors, and Silver Bay.
