Migrants are slowly coming back, and there are many reports. I will be unable to report all the species sighted this week, but will try to indicate where the migrants are being seen. Naturally, there are more reports of migrants from the southernmost counties and both warblers, and shorebirds are represented there so we can expect them soon in the north.
From Grant County on May 2, Wayne Perala reported WESTERN GREBE, HORNED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, and DUNLIN at the North Ottawa Impoundment; on May 3, he found LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, WILLET, SANDERLING, and AMERICAN BITTERN .
In Douglas County, Becca Engdahl found a LONG-TAILED DUCK at the Brandon WTP on May 2.
In Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Wayne Perala reported UPLAND SANDPIPER on April 27. At Oak Grove Cemetery in Fergus Falls, he saw BROAD-WINGED HAWK, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. On April 29, Gary Otnes reported BONAPARTE'S GULL, MARBLED GODWIT, FORSTER’S TERN, COMMON TERN, CLIFF SWALLOW, PALM WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BROWN THRASHER, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD among others.
Sue Waddell in Wadena County observed a WESTERN TANAGER in her yard on May 3.
A CASPIAN TERN was found by Becca Engdahl in Hubbard County on April 30.
In Becker County, Steve Midthune reported a SHORT-EARED OWL along CR13 at Hamden Slough north of Audubon on April 29. Matt Pierce observed an AMERICAN REDSTART in the county on April 30.
HARRIS'S SPARROW was seen by Hebe Shipp in Moorhead, Clay County on April 28.
In Polk County, a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen by Shelley Steva, Zeann Linder, and me a half mile west of 240th St. SW along CR21 on April 29. AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were seen by Steve and Terri Scholand on the Red Lake River in Crookston on April 27. A WHITE-FACED IBIS has been reported by several people at the Agassiz Valley Impoundment both on the Marshall and Polk County sides.
At the quarry in Red Lake County, Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann found a ROSS'S GOOSE, a HERRING GULL, and a COMMON LOON on May 3. At the Red Lake Falls WTP they found a LONG-TAILED DUCK on the near cell. On May 4, Herb saw a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in the city of Red Lake Falls. At the large cemetery just east of the city, we found MERLIN, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, HERMIT THRUSH, and a TURKEY VULTURE nearby on April 29. Shelley Steva saw a BROAD-WINGED HAWK in Oklee on April 28.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was found at the Tindolph Beach on the Red Lake River in Thief River Falls, Pennington County, on April 29. On May 4, it was finally relocated by Herb Dingmann still in Thief River Falls, apparently going between the beach and the WTP where it was still visible at 3 PM today. Herb also reported a WINTER WREN at Greenwood Trails and a WILLET fly by at the WTP. Other species seen in Pennington County this week include WILD TURKEY ,hundreds of FRANKLIN'S GULLS, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.
Matt Jacobson reported that he saw an BALD EAGLE'S with several eaglets near Bemidji in Beltrami County on May 3.
SNOW GOOSE and MARBLED GODWITS were among the species Herb Dingmann reported from the rice paddies in Clearwater County on May 4.
