Finally, it looks as if we are going to get some warmer weather and even a south wind! Migrants are coming, albeit slowly. Depending where you are at a given moment, most migrants have been seen somewhere in the northwest, but we haven't had the usual big rush of migrants in the northwest. We fear that many will fly right over us as it gets later and later.
A HOUSE WREN was reported this week in Roseau County in the city of Warroad.
Keith Wheeler reported HERMIT THRUSH in Thief River Falls on May 22. Here in our yard, we at last have YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER. BALTIMORE ORIOLES are visiting the feeder but not in the usual numbers.
In southwestern Red Lake County, Bob Ekblad observed two COMMON LOONS, a RUDDY TURNSTONE, and a HUDSONIAN GODWIT at the gravel quarry north of US 2.
The Detroit Lakes Birding Festival was held last weekend and Noah Kuck shared some of his sightings. In Polk County at Glacial Ridge NWR, he saw TRUMPETER SWAN, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, SORA, UPLAND SANDPIPER, MARBLED GODWIT, and LE CONTE'S SPARROW among others. At Rydell NWR, he mentioned COMMON LOON, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, and MARSH WREN.
Steve Midthune at a wetland two miles north of Ulen in Clay County observed a pair of AMERICAN AVOCETS, HUDSONIAN GODWITS, DUNLIN, a RUDDY TURNSTONE, and GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS.
At Hamden Slough in Becker County, Noah Kuck saw COMMON LOON, and WILD TURKEY among others. At Tamarac NWR there were TRUMPETER SWANS, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, SEDGE WREN, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and PINE WARBLER among many others.
In Otter Tail County, Wayne Perala reported two FORSTER'S TERNS on May 21, and on May 22, he saw COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, MARSH WREN, HOUSE WREN, SEDGE WREN, EASTERN KINGBIRD, PALM WARBLER, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD. At Oak Grove Cemetery in Fergus Falls, Noah Kuck reported GREEN HERON, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, CANADA WARBLER and others. A PURPLE MARTIN was seen at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center. Nesting at Grotto Lake in Fergus Falls were DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, GREAT EGRETS with very young chicks, and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS.
In Grant County, Charlene Nelson reported an ORCHARD ORIOLE at her feeder on May 23. On May 24, Wayne Perala found two WHITE-FACED IBIS, twelve DUNLIN, GREAT BLUE HERON, and GREAT EGRET at the North Ottawa Impoundment.
