Winter appears to be here now after coming in with a blast of cold and snow yesterday. Ground is white here near Thief River Falls, but it may, we hope, still melt in the next few days. Feeders have been very busy through this, as dark-eyed juncos, black-capped chickadees, nuthatches, white-throated sparrows and Harris's sparrows attempt to find enough food to get through the cold windy period.
Now is the time to look for unusual visitors blown off course by the weather. On October 23, a WHITE-TAILED KITE was reported by Agassiz National Wildlife refuge but there is no word if it is still around. Allyson Engelstad found SANDHILL CRANES, HOODED MERGANSERS, BALD EAGLE, TRUMPETER SWANS, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD there on October 20.
Here in Pennington County on October 21, we had AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, and HARRIS'S SPARROW in the yard.
Dave Lambeth reported EARED GREBE at the East Grand Forks WTP in Polk County on October 24. On the 23rd Sandy Aubol reported a COMMON REDPOLL in her yard.
From Becker County, Heather Hundt and Shawn Goodchild reported a CAROLINA WREN at Fig Lake Farm on October 26.
At Walker, Cass County, Becca Engdahl reported that the HARLEQUIN DUCK reported earlier is still at the Walker WTP as of October 26. Also seen there on October 19 were BUFFLEHEADS, a MERLIN, and a late OSPREY.
In Hubbard County, Marshall Howe saw several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and a MERLIN in Menahga on October 26. On the 24th, he reported AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS.
Ben Eckhoff reporting from Lake Carlos SP in Douglas County on October 24, observed a late BALTIMORE ORIOLE still at the visitor center.
In Grant County, Wayne Perala reported that the WHITE-FACED IBIS and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were still at the N. Ottawa impoundment on October 24. Charlene Nelson observed FOX SPARROW and COMMON REDPOLL at her feeders near Elbow Lake on October 24.
