We have had a really mild week throughout the state , and all the snow
we previously received is gone. Weather forecasters are promising colder
weather next week, but there is so far no mention of much snow. Birding
has been somewhat uneventful this week except for the snowy owls being
reported from the Red River Valley.

In Cass County, Dale Yerger reported a SURF SCOTER on Gull Lake, and two
LONG-TAILED DUCKS off the Shingobee Landing Bar in Walker on November
29. He reports that PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS are increasing in
numbers in the area.

Marshall Howe in Hubbard County had a similar report of PINE GROSBEAKS
and COMMON REDPOLLS.

A CAROLINA WREN is still being reported a the Fig Lake Farm in Becker
County as of November 26.

A SNOWY OWL was reported by Matt Mecklenburg southeast of Glyndon in
Clay County on November 27.

In Polk County, four or five SNOWY OWLS were reported this week. Emily
Hutchins reported HOARY REDPOLLS, COMMON REDPOLLS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE,
and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at her feeder near Mentor on November 27. I
also have a secondhand report of an EVENING GROSBEAK at Maple Lake.
Shelley Steva and I found 20 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in Polk County on
November 25, most of which were in or near Glacial Ridge NWR. We also
saw about 500 SNOW BUNTINGS near the beet piles along CR 20 south of
Sherack. A MERLIN was seen in our travels through the county.

In Red Lake County, two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS , and one NORTHERN HARRIER
were seen on November 25. Shelley Steva reported a GREAT HORNED OWL east
of Plummer and four GRAY PARTRIDGES just east of that on November 29.

Shelley saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE near the 7 Clans Casino in Pennington
County, and a GREAT HORNED OWL just south of Thief River Falls on
November 30.

A SNOWY OWL was observed west of Warren in Marshall County on November
26. This owl or another was subsequently found injured by the side of
the road. On November 30, another one was seen by Karen Gavere in the
same general area.

In Lake of the Woods County, Allan Meadows reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL
along MN 72 on November 29.
