Apply broad knowledge of geology, geochemistry, computer software, and microanalysis to determine the formation conditions (pressure, temperature, oxidation state, volatile abundances) of igneous materials produced by or related to volcanic eruptions. Develop new electron-microprobe and (or) SEM/EDS analytical techniques to measure elemental concentrations and spatial distributions accurately and precisely. Results obtained using the newly developed analytical and imaging methods will be used to model the temperature, pressure, duration, and melt chemistry responsible for magmatic activity and products. Manage electron-microprobe and SEM laboratory accounts, scheduling, and agreements with service technicians; perform day-to-day instrument setup and minor maintenance; advise, train, and assist inexperienced instrument users. Prepare comprehensive scientific reports on the results of the research for publication or administrative use. Author publications, peer-reviewed journal articles, and/or other products of considerable interest to science and/or technology in the area of specialization.
