It has been a pleasant week in the northwest, as the temperatures have cooled somewhat. After all this time with little rain, all the vegetation is looking tired and I expect the trees will start turning early this year. All wildlife is looking for water – in the birdbath, the tomatoes, and all other juicy plants. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS are migrating through the area.
In Kittson County, a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen by Clyde Morris and Joelle Buffa at Lake Bronson State Park. This is not the first time this species has been seen there- makes one wonder if they are there more often than we realize.
At Agassiz NWR Allyson Engelstad found PIED-BILLED GREBES with young, and FORSTER'S TERNS on August 18. She also saw immature ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS.
Here at Thief River Falls in Pennington County, I found several immature COOPER'S HAWKS in the Greenwood Trails area on August 16. In the yard are many juvenile BALTIMORE ORIOLES and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS , and a few adult BALTIMORE ORIOLES are still coming to the jelly. A MERLIN dropped by to terrorize the songbirds on August 21, and on the weekend there were TENNESSEE WARBLERS, AMERICAN REDSTARTS, and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS.
This week Sandy Aubol reported 13 warbler species that visited her yard this week including all of those she reported last week and adding CAPE-MAY WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER. Among the other species she mentioned was a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
In Grant County, the N. Ottawa Impoundment is not disappointing. Wayne Perala reported increasing numbers of GREAT EGRETS and SNOWY EGRETS. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS have also been seen there. Charlene Nelson reported OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and WINTER WREN at their farm near Elbow Lake. On August 18, she reported CONNECTICUT WARBLER.
