Tried but still the dark part at the left of the image remains.

If it is clipping at low mag try adjusting the Objective aperture. That is usually the first culprit.

For the recent replies, it seems someone else must have suggested a problem with alignment. The 40x image definitely looks like an alignment issue. Something seems to be clipping the left side of the scan. I would be curious what it looks like as you zoom in gradually. I presume the shading on the left side moves out of the field of view.

Others have commented on how to do alignments. I would agree, start with the manual.

Do you have a cold finger on that probe? I vaguely recall that they can be rotated in and out of position. Perhaps it is in an intermediate position.

You definitely seem to have a problem with linearity in the X-scan on the right side of the image. Something changed markedly between 950x and 1000x. Many systems change circuitry as you increase magnification. I can clearly hear relays kicking in and out on my current SEM. I suppose the probe would be the same. I would think the magnification has to be calibrated for each system and maybe matched between left and right sides and between top and bottom. Maybe you are simply out of calibration. (I don’t know that is something intended for regular users, even super-users.) Maybe it is a problem due to failing electronics. If so, I think you are looking at a service call.

We have an 8200 that is no longer under contract. Usage is down and management could not justify $33K/year, nor could I. I had to call in a service visit on-demand. I think it cost me $8000 but that is a lot less than paying for the contract. It does help a lot that we have a service engineer about 50 miles away. It saves on travel costs.

Here is a set of consecutive photos (starting from low mag X40).  As you see, part of the image (at left) is dark (the same occurs both in SE and BSE). Also, toward higher mag, the image becomes "blurry" (or something like that).

Could you provide a picture or video of what you describe as internal reflections? And, are you convinced this is the result

of the same issue? Confession: In a former life I was a field service rep for JEOL and had a lot of experience on the 8900s.

I think it would be a big help to see what you are describing.

We have cleaned and reseat all pc boards. Checked all the fuses at the front and back of the control unit but nothing changed. Any other ideas to test?

You can generally visually look at the fuse and see if the wire has burned out (magnifying glass helps) or use a volt ohm meter to test,.  IF the fuse is bad you replace it with the same rated fuse.  Fuses may be located in a block of fuses, on the circuit board or in a fuse holder in a wire (usually a twist to open).   Fuses should be marked on the wiring diagram.   I would suggest a service call.

Ok.

1) how do you check them?

2) how do you replace them?

Great...i`ll try it. so, which PC boards you exactly mean? The one seeting at the front part of the control unit, or at the back, too?

Ioannis,

Turn off console power, remove the lower front cover and try re-seating the PC boards. Sounds like you may have developed

a bad contact (oxidation) on the edge connector of one of the boards.

Dear Colleagues,

I have noticed the following problem on my JEOL JXA-8900 Superprobe.
At the lowest magnification (40X), the 30% of the screen (left part) is black (either under SE or BSE). Please note, that under OM (reflected light) the image looks perfect. Also, at higher mag the horizontal movement (when inspecting a sample) is like having internal reflections. The filament has been replaced very recently, however, i had the same problem still occurring since the last week with the previous filament. Also, at higher mag (from 950X to 1000X and 9500X to 10000X) there is a considerable shift on horizontal axis. I tried the objective lense aperture (X and Y) however, nothing changed. Any idea for the problem and how can i fix it?

All the best.
