Peer Led Support Groups

Today, Wednesday January 19, 2022, Mondale Hall is welcoming a peer-led support group for those living with mental health challenges. This group happens two times a month. Here are some frequently asked questions about this:

Q: Why a peer-led support group?

A: Perspective and shared stories. Having a mental illness is difficult, especially in law school. Having a place to share those difficulties with people who can understand and hold space is important. Plus, flexibility and price, trying to get a trained psychologist to come to host a group at Mondale would be harder to navigate with payment and schedules.

Q: Who can come?

A: Anyone with a mental health diagnosis or suspects they have one. If you think this group could be beneficial to you, please come and try it out.

Q: Do I need to sign up somewhere?

A: No, you can just show up.

Q: Is there a limit to how many people can come?

A: I am unsure of the actual demand for this service, so currently we are not capped. We only have room for 20 people in the room, but we are doing a hybrid model. Please see my email below for the link.

Q: Why NAMI?

A: NAMI is a non-profit focusing on improving the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. I had already been a trained facilitator for groups before coming to law school. After talking with NAMI we got approval to use their group layout so there is a structure and order to the way the group is designed.

Q: I do not have a mental health disorder, will there be a place for me?

A: I do not know if this group will be beneficial for you, but WBI is working on finding additional ways to support the well-being of all students. If you have any ideas on what they may look like please fill out the google form below or email me or anyone at WBI.

Q: Will it be recorded? Will my peers know I was there?

A: This aim is to make this group as confidential as possible. As I will discuss in every group what happens in the group stays in the group.
