Below you will find a copy of my proposal. Lilian A. C. Pereira Martins Group of History and Theory of Science State University of Campinas, Brazil http://www.ifi.unicamp.br/~ghtc/ ------------------- UNDER DARWIN'S SHADOW: EVOLUTIONISTS AT WAR Darwin's theory suffered a series of metamorphoses from the first edition of the Origin of species onward. Several naturalists, claiming to follow Charles Darwin, presented conflicting accounts of the evolution theory. The central aim of this symposium is the discussion of Darwin's heritage, with a special focus upon controversies among evolutionists, up to the present day. Works addressing topics that hitherto have not deserved much attention are especially welcome. Suggested themes include: * Was there ever an orthodox Darwinian? * Is there a Darwinian paradigm or research program? * What is the methodological and conceptual nucleus of Darwin's proposal? * Metamorphoses of Darwin's theory. * Darwin's dialogue with contemporary scientists. * Evolutionary theories inside and outside the Darwinian tradition. * Evolutionary controversies between Darwinians and between opposing approaches. * The variety of attitudes towards Darwin and his theory. * The struggle for authority in the field of evolution. * Ambivalence towards Darwin: respectful disagreement. * Strategies in the diffusion of evolutionary theories. * Rhetoric, metaphors and analogies in evolutionist thought. * Crises in post-Darwinian evolutionary theory. * Was there an eclipse of Darwinism around 1900? * Evolutionary synthesis or evolutionary reform? * Current controversies concerning the foundations of evolution theory. * Popular and educational accounts of Darwin's theory: science fiction? Paper abstracts should be sent as soon as possible, no later than January 10, 1999. If you are interested in contributing a paper to this session, please contact Lilian A. C.
