Hello all,

Here we go again!

As the Packers won the Super Bowl and also because the number of
students interested in learning how to do 3D microscopy on living
cells continues to grow and the manufacturers have promised to
increase their support, we are pleased to announce that the UBC
Live-cell Course be given once more next June 9 - 21, followed the 3D
Image Processing Workshop, June 23-25.

If you haven't heard of this course before, please go to

http://www.3dcourse.ubc.ca/2012/public.php?page=brochure
(You can download a PDF of the Brochure or just read the pages.)

or perhaps check it out with a friend who may have attended in the
past at the searchable Alumni page

http://www.3dcourse.ubc.ca/2012/public.php?page=alumni.

The course includes 4 days on 2D techniques, 5 days of 3D techniques
and 3 days on 3D data measurement, display and presentation. It
includes everything from basic microscopy to confocal, multiphoton
PALM/STORM, and STED microscopy. We expect to have at least 10, 3D
microscope workstations for student use and there will be an
international faculty of more than 20. As usual, there will be some
new faces on the faculty this year. Here is the new list.

Stephen Adams University of California-San Diego, CA
Keng Cho University of British Columbia
Steve Cody Monash University, AU
Anda Cornea Oregon Health-Sciences University
Guy Cox University of Sydney, AU
Jurek Dobrucki Jagiellonian University, Krakow. PL
Kevin Eliceiri University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI
Turan Erdogon Semrock Inc., Rochester, NY
Hans Gerritsen Utrecht University, NL
Kurt Haas University of British Columbia, BC
Stefan Hell Max Planck Institute, Goettingen, DE
Iain Johnson Iain Johnson Consulting, OR
Paul Kulesa Stowers Institute, Kansas City, MO
Jennifer Lippincott-Schwartz	NIH, Bethesda, MD
Glen MacDonald Virginia Bloedel Hearing Inst., WA
Felix Margadant University of Sydney, AU
Tim Murphy University of British Columbia, BC
Justin Newberg Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX
Jim Pawley University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI
Badri Roysam Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY
Derik Toomre Yale University, New Haven, CT
Michael Weis Agriculture Canada, BC
Scott Wetzel, University of Montana, Missoula, MT
Rachel Wong, University of Washington, Seattle, WA

In the first 16 years, well over 500 students from 43 countries have attended.

Most days, morning lectures lead to hands-on laboratory exercises in
the afternoons utilizing most of the commercial instruments currently
available for 3D microscopic imaging. Groups of 4 students will work
with a group advisor in 4, 2D labs and 14, 3D labs sessions, and many
will complete a live-cell 3D study on their own specimens.

A half-day Pre-course is offered on June 9 for those wishing to brush
up on (very!) basic optics.

A draft listing of the program (based on 2011) can be found at

http://www.3dcourse.ubc.ca/2012/docs/program/2011_Program_draft_1.jpg

Hope to see you in Vancouver, next June.

Jim Pawley

APPLICATIONS DUE BY MARCH 15, 2012

APPLICATIONS
Applicants must complete a brief, on-line questionnaire to assess
knowledge level, field of interest and proposed personal, live-cell,
project. (But don't let the Personal Project aspect put you off: if
you plan to use 3D microscopy on living cells, we can usually find a
way to make it work. Many lab managers take the course. as do those
looking for "extended, hands-on, demos" on the latest instruments.)

Enrollment will be limited to about 32 participants (exact number
depends on number of 3D Systems available). Selection will be made
on the basis of background and perceived need. Those without
previous LM experience will be provided with access to basic texts to
read before the course begins. Application forms may be filled out
on line at:

http://www.3dcourse.ubc.ca/2012/public.php?page=apply, or obtained from:

Prof. James B. Pawley, Ph. 608-238-3953
