Hi,

We had similar problem and still have it sometimes.

Here are things have been suggested for the causes of it:

1) Computer problems. We upgraded one of our earliest LSM510 computer and it
has much less errors. The computer should have minimal services installed and
geared toward IO intensive applications.

2) Hardware timing out. If it is repeatedly one device, you service engineer
can change the timing out value in the database.

3) Room is too cold. Some hardware stuck. Turn the machine on first thing when
you come in and let it warming up.

4) Do not use load-up configurations.

I suspect the root of the problems are weak motors in Zeiss scanhead. Many
instances, movable parts could not find reference point or could not move to
specific location in time. Errors are generated and software lost its mind.
One of our collimators stuck again and keeping generating error messages.
Reboot failed to free it. Only way to free it now is to have Zeiss service guy
to free it manually. Meanwhile, we can not use combination of visible lasers
and IR because collimator stuck.

What you can try is going to maintenance to reboot the scanhead. Or go to
"hardware check" and reboot scanhead from there (if your service engineer
agrees you to do so!). Then come out of the software (if you use "reboot
scanhead" button) and restart LSM. This is quicker than restart the whole
system.

Another trick to do if you lost COM port, is to run the CLM software. Then
re-run LSM software. For some reason, CLM software will detect the port and
enable it. This applies to older version of LSM (we have one still run at
2.5). I am not sure the newer Axioset software does the same trick though.

Good luck!

xuejun

>We have had a similar problem for several months. During startup of the AIM
software we get pages and pages of the errors indicating lack of communication
(COM errors). When the program is finnaly open there is no software control
of any of the components. The problem has been intermittant and so I have not
pressed our engineer to resolve it. However, it should be addressed. My
resolution has been to restart (from full shutdown) over and over until it
works. This usually takes 3-4 attempts although the record is now up to 7
restarts. We are running AIM version 3 on an upgrade computer from Zeiss that
was installed in December. The problem started with the new computer. Our IT
specialists suspect "timing issues" between the new faster computer and the
electronics box of the LSM system, but have not done any diagnostic work.
Anyone else with similar experience and any ideas?
