Then definitely check out VolVis, as Derek Schulze suggested. It's
quite powerful, although "user-friendly' might not be the most accurate
description of it. If you have someone who has the time to learn
it--e.g., a comp-sci student who's interested in imaging--the program
can do many, many good things.
