Greetings Mary,
    It is a common convention to express intensity values in terms of
Arbitrary Units (A.U.) on a scale which reflects the bit-depth of the
sensor used (in your case 8-bit; scale of 0-255 A.U.).  An alternative
is to normalize the intensity values to correspond to a scale of 0 to 1.
