We use surge protectors for our system mainly to stabilize the power coming
into the system and to protect from surges, spikes, and dropouts.  The
orderly shut-down of the system during a power outage we feel is also a
great advantage.
 
We purchase our surge protectors from that high tech emporium COSTCO brand:
APC "Powercell", and have had good experience from them.
