Kevin:
I was suspicious that the system was booting quicker--at least getting to the communications stage--before the E box was ready. But, we have tried powering up the computer much later, and still have experienced the problem. I do not know if the SCSI card was new--I would have to check with the field tech. I just now tried starting it--no problems on 2 startups. I looked through the log book and found complaints from various users at a frequency of about one day per week. Key word: intermittent!

I wonder if the new system is booting so much quicker that it's checking for devices before the older electronics box is able to fully initialize.
Have you tried leaving the computer turned off while starting up the rest of the system, and turning on the computer after a couple of minutes?
The intermittent nature of it does sound more like cable/connection/controller problems, though. Was the old SCSI card swapped into the new system, or was a new one used?

When the program is finnaly open there is no software control of any of the components. The problem has been intermittant and so I have not pressed our engineer to resolve it. However, it should be addressed. My resolution has been to restart (from full shutdown) over and over until it works. This usually takes 3-4 attempts although the record is now up to 7 restarts. We are running AIM version 3 on an upgrade computer from Zeiss that was installed in December. The problem started with the new computer. Our IT specialists suspect "timing issues" between the new faster computer and the electronics box of the LSM system, but have not done any diagnostic work. Anyone else with similar experience and any ideas?
