We are using photon-counting microscopy to visualize and quantitate
bioluminescence from single cells of Vibrio harveyi and from single cells
of genetically engineered bacteria containing the lux cassette (from Vibrio
fischeri) coupled to specific gene promoters (i.e., napthalene
degradation). If this is the sort of thing you'd like to do, give me a
shout. However, as usual the "cell" folks are way ahead of us in this area
- many people are doing this in eukaryotic cells and I'd refer you to the
Cold Spring Harbor meetings web site
(http://www.cshl.org/meetings/96spec.htm) for an upcoming conference on the
subject.
