Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Super Resolution
Electron Microscope Unit/ Australian Key Centre for Microscopy and
Microanalysis
Reference No. A10/004725

The Electron Microscope Unit (EMU) intends to appoint an outstanding
research scientist as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the development of
super-resolution methods in confocal and multiphoton optical microscopy.
The research project is supported by the Australian Research Council's
Discovery Program and represents an important component of the overall
research program of NANO (Nanostructural Analysis Network Organisation).
The research is to be undertaken in the EMU at the University of Sydney.
The Unit's research programs are undertaken through the Australian Key
Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis.

The purpose of the position is to develop applications of super-resolving
filters in scanned optical microscopes, involving both theoretical analyses
and practical trials in commercial confocal microscopes. It is envisaged
that this will lead to presentations at national and international
conferences and papers in leading academic journals. The Research Fellow
will also participate actively in the general academic life of the Unit,
including research training and research services.

Essential Criteria
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. with a background in physical optics and
must be able to demonstrate a successful track record in research and/or
excellent research potential. In addition, applicants must have excellent
practical skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in
oral and written form. The successful applicant will have demonstrated
project management skills and an appreciation for the issues and
opportunities arising from working in a truly interdisciplinary research
environment where service and the creation of a multi-user research
facility are key organisational objectives. Applicants must demonstrate
initiative to assure the overall success of the research program, as well
as the ability to work as a member of a team.

Desirable Criteria
Experience with microscopy, super-resolving filters and/or confocal
microscopy is desirable.

The position is full-time fixed term for one year subject to the completion
of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. There is the
possibility of further offers of employment subject to funding and need.
For further information and a copy of the duty statement contact Associate
Professor Guy C. Cox, on 9351 3176, fax 9351 7682 or e-mail:
