My understanding (via our local Olympus rep) is that turning them off
and then on is not a problem. However, he said that turning them on and
then off after less than 15 minutes IS a problem.

I can't vouch for his accuracy but (knock on wood!) we've never had a
lamp blow in this lamp house and the lamps can last for 400 hours or
more if we're willing to put up with the falling output above 600 nm
(--which we use to excite Cy5).
