Virtualdub + Avisynth. You can do all kind of manipulation using 
Avisynth. The scripting language is simple and one can learn it in an 
hour. Moreover, you can always preview your work or produce "virtually" 
stitched files since Avisynth can work as a frameserver. "Virutal 
stiching" means that the files are physically separated but you play 
them as one, and your media player will see them as one file. Ergo: no 
recompression necessary.
