I've been following this with some interest though so far I haven't
noticed any similar problems with our PCO Sensicam. However I'm doing
some serious quantitative work (rather than just imaging) on Monday
so I'll be on my guard.

Surely, at the prices these cameras cost, it would be feasible for
the manufacturers to check out the chip and build in a correction
look-up table (for the individual chip) into the acquisition software.
If you later updated the chip you could be given the appropriate LUT
as a file on disk. It seems like a trivial task and would avoid a lot
of negative publicity. Any comments from camera suppliers?
